Layer Your Lighting
Combining ambient, task and accent lighting creates depth, improves functionality and allows you to adapt a room throughout the day. Ceiling lights provide overall illumination, table lamps offer focused light for reading or working, while floor lamps and wall lights help create warmth and highlight decorative features. Layering these different light sources creates spaces that feel balanced.
Using multiple light sources instead of relying on a single ceiling light gives you greater flexibility while creating a softer, more inviting atmosphere.
Choose the Right Lighting for Every Room
Lighting does more than brighten a room—it influences the atmosphere, functionality and overall appearance of your home. The right lighting can make spaces feel warm and inviting, highlight architectural features and improve everyday comfort. Whether you’re updating a single room or styling your entire home, combining decorative lighting with practical illumination helps create interiors that are both beautiful and functional.
Living Room
Position floor lamps beside sofas or armchairs to create comfortable reading areas, while table lamps on side tables provide softer evening lighting that helps create a relaxed atmosphere.
Home Office
Good task lighting reduces eye strain and provides focused illumination for working, studying or creative projects.
Dining Room
Pendant lights positioned above the dining table help define the space while creating a warm, inviting setting for family meals and entertaining.
Entrance Hall
Well-positioned lighting creates a welcoming first impression while improving visibility and safety.
Bedroom
Layer bedside table lamps with softer ambient lighting to create a comfortable environment for reading and relaxation.
Outdoor Spaces
Outdoor lighting helps extend the use of patios, gardens and entrances after sunset while improving security and highlighting landscaping features.
Understanding Lighting Terms
Lampholder Types
Choosing the correct lampholder helps ensure your light fitting works safely and correctly. In South Africa, the two most common lampholder types are SA Bayonet (BC) and E27 (ES). Understanding the difference makes it easier to select compatible bulbs and lighting accessories with confidence. Find below the two most commonly used lamp fitting types.
SA Bayonet Lamp Fitting:
- Most commonly used in South Africa
- Also referred to as BC / Bayonet / SA
- Bulb “clips” and turns in
- Smaller lampholder
- More affordable
E27 / Euro Lamp Fitting:
- Most commonly used overseas
- Also referred to as ES / Screw in
- Bulb screws in
- Larger lampholder
- More expensive

Washer Types
The washer, also known as the shade ring, is welded to the lampshade and forms part of the fitting that connects to the lampholder of the lamp base.
Not all washers are interchangeable with different lampholders. One must clearly know the difference between the 2 most commonly used washers to allow your lampshade to fit onto your lamp base properly
Should you order lampshades manufactured with E27 washers in error, one can purchase “converters” from us that clip onto the existing E27 washer to convert it to a SA washer instead. This is a cheaper alternative than remaking the lampshade.
